Q: I received a letter confirming my acceptance into the IT Academy, what do I do next?
A: If you are an accepted applicant for the IT Academy at LHS and you live out of zone, you need to come down to Lakeland High School and enroll. Make sure you bring two proofs of residency. If you are and accepted applicant for the IT Academy at LHS and are either zoned for LHS or are already a student at LHS then you need to check with your guidance counselor to ensure you are enrolled in the appropriate class.
Q: If I do not live in Lakeland High School's zone, do I need to fill out an out of zone transfer for the district?
A: You do not have to fill out an out of zone transfer to come to the IT Academy at Lakeland High School. However, you do need to apply to the IT Academy online at PolkAcademies.com
Q: Do I have to choose Web Design or Computer Programming right away?
A: You do not have to choose one of the two tracks until the end of your 9th grade year.
Q: What is dual enrollment?
A: Dual enrollment, traditionally is where a student takes college classes to satisfy their high school credit requirements. This allows for them to also earn college credit. The way we offer dual enrollment here at the IT Academy is that your student will take a class in high school that qualifies for college credit.
Q: Is there a cost for being in the IT Academy?
A: There is no cost for being apart of the IT Academy. The IT Academy will pay for your industry certification. The dual enrollment credit is paid for by Polk County School Board and Polk State College.
Q: Can I participate in extra-curricular activities such as Cheerleading, Softball, Basketball, or Football?
A: You can participate in any extra-curricular activities you desire. There are no after school activities that the IT Academy requests of you other than studying and homework typical of any high school class.
Q: What computer programs are used in the IT Academy?
A: We use a variety of programs in our classes here at the IT Academy. We are currently using the Adobe CS3 Designer Suite which has Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash, Illustrator, In Design, Photoshop, and Acrobat Pro. We also use different web browsers such as Internet Explorer, Safari, and Firefox. Other programs that will be used are Microsoft Office programs, NetBeans, Skype, & Quicktime Pro.
